Gas Turbine product support for Hydrogen contained gasses.

Authors list

Woodward recognizes the increased interest in hydrogen usage in gas turbines applications. In support of our customers around the world, we have launched programs to modify many of our current products to make them capable of operation in fuel metering applications on blends of hydrogen and methane up to 100% hydrogen. Similarly, as some customers are investigating the feasibility of hydrogen-based liquid fuels such as methanol and anhydrous ammonia, Woodward is making modifications to some of our liquid fuel control valves to support these efforts.

At this time, products generally fit into three categories:

1. Legacy products not under evaluation

2. Current products without modification

3. Products undergoing modification

Certain older product lines are not being evaluated for hydrogen use in any blend with methane. This is not to say that they are strictly incompatible with hydrogen-methane blends, but Woodward is not evaluating them for suitability with any particular blend level. Legacy products not under evaluation would include, but not be limited to:

• 1907 small and large gas valves

• 1907 small and large liquid valves

• 3103 gas metering valves

• 3171 gas metering valves

• GSOV gas shutoff valves

Many of the products Woodward ships today are already compatible with hydrogen-methane blends up to 50% hydrogen by volume without any further modification. These current products include:

• GS6/GS16/GS16DR gas metering valves

• GS40/GS50 gas metering valves

• SonicFlo GFCV gas metering valves – all models

• SonicFlo LESV/LESV II gas metering valves – all models

• HGV gas metering valves

• EGMV gas metering valves

• GSOV25HT gas shutoff valves

• USOV gas shutoff valves

• GSOV80 gas shutoff valves

Numerous efforts are underway to validate critical component replacements, including seals and wetted materials, for service conditions up to 100% hydrogen or in the case of liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, or methanol. These efforts will result in H2-specific variations of the existing products. These products include:

• GS40/GS50 gas metering valves

• GSOV80 gas shutoff valves

• SonicFlo GFCV gas metering valves – HR/UHR models only

• SonicFlo LESV/LESV II gas metering valves – all models

• LQ6 liquid metering valves for anhydrous ammonia and methanol

This is not intended to serve as an exhaustive list and Woodward continues to evaluate opportunities across our product families. If you have interest about a product not listed in this bulletin, please feel free to submit an ticket  or ask your local Woodward representative to discuss.
